Call for papers - Culture and the State in Contemporary China workshop

Postgraduate Workshop on Culture and the State in Contemporary China
Contemporary China Studies Programme, University of Oxford
3 June 2011

This workshop is organized by postgraduate students and seeks to promote interdisciplinary dialogue between researchers working on different aspects of contemporary Chinese culture from the fields of politics, sociology, anthropology, art history, history, literature, cultural studies, etc. The workshop intends to provide a platform for postgraduates to meet, share ideas, and receive feedback from faculty members and peers.

Suggestions of possible topics/approaches:
* Intellectual culture, cultural theory, cultural critique and ideology
* Arts and visual culture: literature, cinema, theatre, design, the creative arts
* Media culture: the Internet, virtual networks, blogs, online activism
* Consumer culture, popular culture, urban culture, leisure, cultural economy
* Culture, power, urban spaces: cityscape, urban planning, stagings of power, museums studies, public spaces
* Cultural tourism, ethnic culture, regional culture
* Globalization, transnational culture, cultural identity

Other topics or approaches are encouraged. Historical and cross-national comparisons are welcome, although contemporary China (or at least post-1949 China) should be the main focus.

The one-day workshop is sponsored by the Contemporary China Studies Programme, University of Oxford and will take place at Oxford on 3 June 2011. Interested participants please submit your abstract of no more than 500 words to Karita Kan, Department of Politics and International Relations (karitakan@gmail.com<mailto:karitakan@gmail.com>) by 25 April 2011. Successful applicants will be notified by 29 April and are expected to submit the full paper for a presentation of 15-20 minutes by 20 May.
