The
Department of East Asian Studies, McGill University (Montreal, Canada),
announces a postdoctoral fellowship with support from the Henry Luce
Foundation
to begin Aug. 1, 2013, renewable for two subsequent years. The fellow
will assist the Director of the Ming Qing Women’s Writings Digital
Archive and Database (http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/mingqing),
Prof. Grace S. Fong (grace.fong@mcgill.ca),
in executing, managing, and developing the collaborative digitization
project with the National Library of China (Beijing) and East China
Normal University (Shanghai). The ideal candidate will combine knowledge
of digital technology with a disciplinary specialization
in the Humanities/Social Sciences, Library and Information Science, or
Education Technology. Native or near-native fluency in oral and written
English and modern Chinese are required; knowledge of classical Chinese
an asset. The ideal candidate will have experience
with application development in PHP, MySQL relational databases &
data modeling, familiarity with web tools (PHP, HTML, CSS, and
JavaScript), and experience working with standardized metadata,
prosopographical implementations in a relational database, and
be able to produce technical documentation in English to support their
work. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach
one course in the general area of Chinese digital humanities studies
depending on their expertise.
Applicants
must have received their PhD degree in 2008 or later, but must have
completed all requirements for the PhD degree by July 31, 2013. The
annual
fellowship stipend will be CAD$50,000. The application deadline is April 20, 2013.
